Canada Open starts today with Asian stars dominating

From July 5-9, the YONEX Canada Open will be held in Calgary, Canada’s third largest city, at the Markin-MacPhail Centre, which is frequently used by Canadian Olympians as a training and development venue.

In the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament, players competed for a total prize pool of US$420,000 or approximately Rs.6.3 billion along with major points for the Olympic qualifying period.

This year, the Canadian Open will celebrate its 58th edition and players from around the world will join forces in the Americas for another great edition.

Over the five days of competition, athletes such as Japanese stars Kodai Naraoka, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, Arnaud Merkle and Nhat Nguyen will play in the main draw, and on home soil Brian Yang will face European Games bronze medalist in the last week, Misha Zilberman. .

Michelle Li, who is also one of the top seeds in the Canada Open, will play at home in the women’s singles alongside compatriots Wen Yu Zhang, Talia Ng and Rachel Chan. Jenjira Stadelann (Switzerland), who won bronze at the 2023 European Games last week, will compete in the Super 500, along with Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen, who won gold in Poland.

In the men’s doubles sector, Indonesian veterans Mohammad Ahsan / Hendra Setiawan will also compete in the 2023 Canada Open, as well as former world champions from Japan, Takuro Hoki / Yugo Kobayashi.
