LIVE the world – The Government of Canada on Monday, February 28, 2023, officially banned access to TikTok on all mobile phones and other devices, citing data protection concerns.
TikTok, whose parent company ByteDance is Chinese-owned, has come under increasing scrutiny from the West in recent months over concerns about Beijing’s degree of access to user data.
“The TikTok app will be removed from government-issued mobile devices. Users of these devices will also be prevented from downloading the app in the future,” the government said in a statement, quoted by NDTVTuesday, February 28, 2023.
He added that Canada’s Chief Information Officer had determined that the app posed a level of risk to privacy and security. While there is no evidence of a government data breach related to the app, the Canadian government warns that TikTok’s data collection methods provide extensive access to phone content.
The European Commission also banned the app last week, following the US decision. A TikTok spokesperson said Canada’s decision to block TikTok was odd because it was made without considering specific security issues or consulting with the TikTok company.
For your information, relations between China and Canada have deteriorated in recent years, including following Canada’s arrest of a senior Huawei executive in 2018, as well as China’s retaliatory detention of two Canadian citizens.
