Canada to remove 100% import tax on Chinese electric vehicles

Jakarta

Canada plans to impose 100% import duties on electric vehicle imports from China. The electric vehicle import duties will apply to all electric vehicles shipped from China, including those produced by Tesla. The policy will come into effect on October 1, 2024.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the move was aimed at suppressing imports from China. The surge in electric vehicle imports from China is suspected to be intentional as the country is experiencing excess production.

“I think we all know that China doesn’t have the same rules. The most important thing is that we do it in harmony and in parallel with the economies of other countries around the world,” Trudeau said on the sidelines of a three-day closed-door cabinet meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as quoted by Reuters on Tuesday (27/8/2024).

FYI, Canadian car imports from China to the Port of Vancouver will increase 460% year-on-year to 44,356 in 2023. This figure also apparently got a boost when Tesla began shipping Shanghai-produced electric vehicles to Canada.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Canada said Canada has ignored World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. It is feared that this policy will harm economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and hurt consumers and businesses.

“The Canadian government insists on announcing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, despite China’s serious objections and statements. China urges Canada to respect objective facts, abide by WTO rules, immediately correct its wrong practices, and refrain from politicizing economic and trade issues,” he said. said.

So far, no response has been received from Tesla.

In addition to tariffs on electric vehicle imports, Canada will also impose 25% import duties on steel and aluminum imports from China.
