Ottawa –
Parliament Canada unanimously agreed to host 10,000 Uighur refugees who fled China and are now facing pressure to be repatriated.
As reported AFPThursday (2/2/2023), the motion discussing the acceptance of approximately 10,000 Uyghur refugees was unanimously approved by the parliament in Ottawa in a vote Wednesday (1/2) local time.
The motion builds on a move by Canadian lawmakers in February 2021 to label Beijing’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Turkish Muslim ethnic minorities in the region. Xinjiang as genocide.
Human rights groups (HAM) estimate that at least 1 million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities have been imprisoned in detention camps in Xinjiang, where China is also accused of forced sterilization of women and forced labor.
Tens of thousands of people have fled the Xinjiang region in recent years.
And according to Canadian MP Sameer Zuberi, who moved the motion, at least 1,600 people are being held in several other countries on Chinese orders or forcibly repatriated.
During a press conference on Wednesday (1/2) local time, Zuberi pointed out that Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau and his cabinet voted in favor of the motion, indicating “the government’s intention to make it a reality. “even if it is not legally required.
“It is a clear signal that we do not accept human rights violations against the Uyghur people,” Zuberi said in his statement.
“What happened to the Uyghurs is unacceptable,” he added.
