Canada looks to defend its gold medal at the IIHF World Championship – and the country is sending one of its most talented teams in recent history.
Even though the hockey world is mainly focused on the Stanley Cup Playoffs, another international tournament is starting in Europe. The 2024 IIHF World Championship will take place over the next two weeks in Czechia, with 16 countries competing for the right to be named world champions.
The nation sporting the maple leaf enters this year’s competition as defending champions. Canada beat Germany last year in the gold medal game, winning its second gold medal in three years.

This year, the team is loaded with NHL talent, including Blackhawks rookie sensation Connor Bedard, Maple Leafs captain John Tavares, King center Pierre-Luc Dubois and Sabers defenseman Bowen Byram.

Canada schedules 2024 IIHF World Championship
Canada is expected to play a minimum of seven preliminary round games at the 2024 IIHF World Championship. The top four teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, where it is a single elimination.
The reigning gold medalists are part of a group made up of Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Norway and Switzerland.
