PARIS – Canadian fencer Fares Arfa suffered a narrow defeat in the quarterfinals of the men’s individual sabre on Saturday, hours after beating the three-time defending Olympic champion.
Arfa, who was making his Olympic debut, lost 15-13 to South Korea’s Oh Sang-uk.

Sang-UK is ranked fourth in the world, while Arfa is ranked 35th.
Earlier Saturday, Arfa beat three-time gold medalist Aaron Szilagyi (SEE’-lah-ghee) of Hungary 15-8.

The victory took him to the round of 16, where he also beat Frenchman Boulade Apithy 15-8.
Arfa, 29, born in Algeria, lives in Laval, Quebec. He represented Canada at two editions of the Pan American Games.
