A military helicopter Canada fell into a river near the base west of the capital Ottawa. Two people were reported missing as a result of this incident.
AFP reported on Tuesday (20/6/2023) a CH-147F Chinook carrying members of the 450th Tactical Helicopter Squadron crashed into the Ottawa River near Garrison Petawawa, Ontario. The helicopter is said to have crashed in the middle of an exercise.
“During a training flight in the morning,” the military said in a statement.
Two crew members were missing, while two other people were found and taken to hospital. There is no detailed information on the chronology of the accident.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wished for a “speedy and full recovery of the injured” and that “all members of 450 Squadron are in my thoughts as search efforts continue.”
Officials said the helicopter crashed around 12:10 p.m. local time. Base Petawawa is located 165 kilometers (100 miles) west of Ottawa.
About 50 soldiers combed the banks of the Ottawa River, while a police marine unit inspected the waters. A military rescue plane and local firefighters are also helping with the search.
Seafarers are urged to stay clear of the area to avoid “potentially hazardous materials from aircraft”,
According to the Royal Air Force CanadaChinook CH-147F is a multipurpose helicopter used to transport equipment and personnel for operations at home and abroad.
