  • The record for the largest diamond is still held by the Cullinan Diamond, weighing 3,106, discovered in 1902.

CLEAR — Lucara Diamond, a Canadian mining company operating in Botswana, claims to have discovered the second largest diamond in the world.

In an official statement posted on its website, Lucara said the diamond found weighed 2,492 carats. Diamonds were discovered at the Karowe mine in Botswana.

Russia Today reported that the diamond was discovered using Mega Diamond Recovery X-Ray Transmission (XRT) technology. The technology has been used since 2017 to identify and preserve large, high-value diamonds.

“We are very excited about this discovery,” said William Lamb, CEO of Lucara Diamond. “This discovery demonstrates the extraordinary potential of the Karowe mine and our strategic investment in technology.”

Previously, Lucara mined at Seweto and found a 1,758-carat diamond in 2019. At the Lesedi La Rona mine in 2015, Lucara found a 1,109-carat diamond.

The record for the largest diamond is still held by the Cullinan Diamond at 3,106 carats, discovered in 1902 in South Africa. The diamond was cut into 100 stones, including the 530.5 carat Cullinan I. The diamond is now set in the Sceptre and Crown of England.
