Football News: Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has been appointed as Canada’s national team coach, Canada Soccer said on Monday (13/05) five weeks before the team that will face Argentina in the opening match of the Copa America is announced.
Marsch succeeds Mauro Biello, who served in the interim role after John Herdman left the post last August to join Major League Soccer club Toronto FC.
The appointment of Marsch, who was sacked by Leeds United in February 2023, was announced by Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue in a video posted on social media.
“I will be calling Jesse Marsch and confirming that he will be the next head coach of our Canadian men’s national team,” Blue said in the video.
Marsch then joined the call.
“I really appreciate your trust and confidence in me,” Marsch said by phone. “I guarantee I will repay your trust at every level. And this team will be something that every Canadian will be excited about.”
The Canadian national team will face the Netherlands (June 6) and France (June 9) before its Copa America match on June 20 against Argentina. This year’s Copa America will be held in the United States.
Canada is not under pressure to win the tournament because they are not the best team. Argentina remains the favorite to win the 2024 Copa America.
