Getty ImagesCanadian Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul died in a car accident at the age of 31.
She was killed Tuesday when a truck crashed into several stopped vehicles in Ontario, police said.
Her baby, who was in the vehicle with her, survived and was treated at hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Ms. Paul was a “shining star on and off the ice” who left an “indelible mark” on the world of figure skating, Skate Canada said.
During her career, she won a silver medal at the 2010 World Junior Figure Skating Championships and represented Canada at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
Alongside her partner and husband, Mitchell Islam, she won several international medals before retiring from competitive skating in 2016.
“It is with a heavy heart that Skate Canada announces the sudden passing of a dear member of our skating community, Alexandra Paul,” the organization said in a statement.
“As we remember Alexandra’s contribution to sport, we also reflect on the camaraderie and sportsmanship she demonstrated.
“She was not only an accomplished athlete but also a true role model for aspiring skaters, demonstrating the values of resilience, perseverance and sportsmanship.
“Our thoughts are with Alexandra’s family, her friends and everyone who was lucky enough to know her during this difficult time.”
Sports channel Michele Tafoya wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Ms. Paul was an “accomplished young woman.”
