Calgary: Indian soccer stars PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s and men’s singles respectively at the Canadian Open Super 500 here Thursday night.
Sindhu stepped up after his Japanese opponent Natsuki Nidaira gave him a round. Sen secured a 21-15, 21-11 win over Brazilian Yegor Coelho in 31 minutes.
Sindhi will face Indonesian world champion Gao Fangjie, who was instrumental in China’s victory at this year’s Asian Mixed Tag Team Championships.
Sen, the defending Commonwealth Games champion, takes on Julien Carraghi of Belgium.
However, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Joud Bangala could not advance to the semi-finals, as they were beaten 9-21, 11-21 by Indonesian second seed and world number 7 Muhammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.
Sen is slowly finding his touch after going through a bit of a patch earlier in the season.
On Thursday, Sin had an uphill battle against Coelho, who erased a 0-2 deficit with a four-point flurry and then kept up the intensity. The duo went neck and neck until 13-13 when Sin was able to press and seal the game after jumping to 20-15 with a five-point lead.
In game two, Sen had no problems as he took a 12-2 lead and closed it out comfortably.
