“Everything we offered was leaked to the papers, it was inappropriate,” Xi told Trudeau through an interpreter, CBC reported.

“It’s not up for discussion, if there is sincerity on your part,” he continued.

So what is the Canadian PM’s response?

Trudeau countered by telling Xi that if there were differences of opinion, cooperation should come first.

“We believe in honest and open dialogue, and that’s what we will continue to do. We will continue to work together constructively, but there will be things we will not share,” Trudeau said.

“Let’s work out the terms first,” Xi said before the two shook hands and then parted ways.

The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office released a transcript of the two’s talks.

According to the transcript, Trudeau expressed concern over media reports that China surreptitiously hired 11 candidates for the 2019 Canadian federal election.

Besides these issues, Trudeau and Xi also discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, South Korea’s bullying of North Korea, and the upcoming COP15 biodiversity summit in Montreal, Canada.
