Canadian PM Trudeau meets President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit, here’s what was discussed

Bisnis.comJAKARTA – Prime Minister Canada Justin Trudeau expressed his concerns to Xi Jinping on the alleged Chinese interference in Canadian democracy, on the sidelines of the event G20 Summit in Bali, Tuesday (15/11/2022).

Based on Canadian media reports of (7/11/2022) intelligence officials, that China is suspected of interfering in the 2019 general election (Pemilu).

Additionally, an employee of Canada’s largest power producer was arrested and charged by police on Monday (11/14/2022) for attempted theft of Chinese trade secrets.

Regarding Trudeau’s expression of concern, the Chinese Embassy (Embassy) in Ottawa did not immediately respond to provide confirmation.

Roland Paris, a former foreign policy adviser to Trudeau and a professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa, said the Canadian Intelligence Service must do more for Canadian democracy.

“Canada’s intelligence services, which are usually silent in public, have shown concern that this is an issue that compels the Canadian government to take additional steps to safeguard Canadian democracy,” Roland Paris said.

Trudeau and Xi also discussed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, North Korea and the importance of the December summit in Montreal to protect nature and fight climate change.

As for Trudeau and Xi, they faced each other in the room where they spoke on the sidelines of the G20 summit for about 10 minutes. DACsWednesday (16/11/2022).

“We’ve been talking about a relationship that’s been frozen for years, so it’s no surprise that the first contacts at leadership level are informal,” said the Parisian political analyst.

Diplomatic tensions between Canada and China have escalated since the 2018 detention of Huawei Technologies executive Meng Wanzhou and Beijing’s subsequent arrests of two Canadian citizens accused of spying.

While the standoff ended when the three men were released last year, relations have remained sour.

Trudeau and Xi last met in June 2019 on the sidelines of another G20 in Osaka, Japan. Previously, they had met three times, once in 2015 on the sidelines of the G20 in Turkey, and twice during official visits to Beijing in 2016 and 2017.
