Canadian twins are world’s most premature babies, born at 22 weeks

Liputan6.com, Ottawa – A Canadian pair of male and female twins born at 22 weeks have been named the world’s most premature twins by the Guinness World Record.

Pregnancy is usually 40 weeks, that means they were born 18 weeks early.

It was Adiah and Adrial Nadarajah who were born 126 days earlier, surpassing the previous record of twins born 125 days earlier in the state of Iowa, USA in 2018.

Reported BBCWednesday (03/08/2023) Shakina Rajendram, mother of the twins says when she gave birth at just 21 weeks and five days, doctors told her her babies could not survive and had a zero percent chance to survive.

In fact, quoted by the Guinness page, if she had given birth just an hour earlier, the doctor would have done nothing to save her.

This is their second pregnancy, after losing the first. This loss had occurred a few months earlier in the same hospital, near their home in Ontario.

Most hospitals generally do not help premature births with pregnancies before 24 to 26 weeks. But luckily the couple were able to move to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, which has a dedicated neonatal intensive care unit.
