Surabaya (beritajatim.com) – The Royal Canadian Navy warship, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Montreal, visited Surabaya after sailing in the Indo-Pacific region as part of Operation PROJECTION July 7-10 .
This visit is part of the bilateral defense cooperation between Canada and Indonesia and aims to promote peace and stability in the region.
Canadian Defense Attaché (CDA), Col. Stewart Taylor, along with Deputy Commander, Col. Baedhowi Oktafidia, and Chief of Operations, Col. Muhammad Taufik, representing the Indonesian Navy’s Main Base V Commander, welcomed the arrival of HMCS Montreal to Indonesian Navy Main Base V in Surabaya.
During the visit, Commanding Officer of HMCS Montreal, Paul Mountford, had a meeting with Rear Admiral TNI Maman Firmansyah, Commander of Fleet Command (Pangkoarmada) II, and First Admiral Dato Rusman, Deputy Governor of the Naval Academy.
They discussed various issues of common interest. In addition, the ship’s crew also participated in social service activities at Laksamana Moeljadi Orphanage.

HMCS Montreal left her homeport of Halifax in March and is in the Indo-Pacific region as part of Canada’s increased commitment to the new Indo-Pacific strategy. Canada will invest in various initiatives to support defense and security in the region over the coming years, including increasing the number of warships deployed each year.
This investment aims to increase Canada’s presence and expand cooperation with other countries to promote peace, resilience and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
“HMCS Montreal’s visit to Surabaya is an example of the expansion of naval cooperation between Canada and Indonesia. This is an important part of our Indo-Pacific strategy to strengthen relations with Indonesia,” said Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, YM Nadia Burger.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Ambassador to ASEAN, YM Vicky Singmin, added that Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy plays a central role in our commitment to deepen partnerships with ASEAN in line with the views of the ASEAN on the Indo-Pacific.

“Our naval engagement is an effort to promote maritime peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region,” Singmin said.
HMCS Montreal is equipped with anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare weapons and an advanced detection system. These means of warfare have made HMCS Montreal one of the most advanced warship designs in the world.
During Operation PROJECTION, the ship will participate in a series of international naval exercises in the Indo-Pacific region to promote peace and stability.
In addition, HMCS Montreal is also equipped with a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter which is ready to take off. This visit marked the participation of a frigate from the East Coast of Canada in Operation PROJECTION in the Indo-Pacific region. [beq]
