F1 News: Carlos Sainz was rewarded with a three position grid penalty after hampering Pierre Gasly’s progress in qualifying for the Canadian GP so he started from P11.
As we know, the qualifying session for the Canadian Grand Prix started with a wet track after a rain. All the teams predict that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will gradually dry out, but then the rain causes many drivers to commit infractions.
Ferrari representative Carlos Sainz became the last driver to complete a lap and was the best in Q1. But at turn 13, the Spaniard voluntarily slowed down in front of Pierre Gasly who was trying to improve his record.
As a result, Gasly was forced off the track to avoid a collision. The steward then sprang into action and summoned Sainz for further details. After viewing video footage of the incident, he received a three-gate penalty to start 11th, just behind Charles Leclerc.
Besides Carlos Sainz, Yuki Tsunoda, who is an AlphaTauri racer, was also investigated by the FIA and given a three-grid penalty. The young Japanese was embarrassing for Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) and Leclerc.
Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll was also penalized after hampering the pace of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon after lapping one of the fastest laps in Q2. He was also forced down three grids in his home race.
Last is Nico Hulkenberg, where the German broke the red flag during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix. In addition to grid penalties, super license penalty points have also increased to three points over the past 12 months.
