Olympic News: The Canadian women’s soccer team now faces a blockbuster match against Colombia after its appeal against FIFA sanctions was rejected by the ad hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Paris on Wednesday (31/07).
The rejection of the appeal means that the Canadian team must play a deathmatch to ensure its qualification for the women’s soccer group stage at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Soccer, which appealed FIFA’s sanctions on Monday, expressed disappointment with the outcome.
In a statement released Wednesday, they expressed gratitude to the judicial division for the expedited process and commended the players for their resilience during the tournament.
“We congratulate the players on their extraordinary resilience and courage during this tournament and look forward to supporting them (against Colombia),” they wrote.
The CAS decision, taken by a panel of arbitrators including presidents Roberto Moreno of Paraguay, Philippe Sands of Great Britain/France and Laila El Shentenawi of Egypt, upheld the sanction imposed by FIFA.
The sanctions include a six-point deduction in the group stage, a one-year suspension from all football activities for head coach Bev Priestman and staff members Joey Lombardi and Jasmine Mander, and a fine of nearly $313,000.
FIFA ruled that the Canadian team violated rules regarding the “prohibition on flying drones over training sites” ahead of its opening match against New Zealand. Canada won the match 2-1 and the penalty remained in place.
