Bisnis.comJAKARTA – China has provided clarification regarding the circulating viral video containing the president Xi Jinping considered to have berated the Prime Minister (PM) of Canada Justin Trudeau.
In the video, Xi can be seen lecturing Trudeau because the Canadian government leaked their private talks to the public.
In a Reuters report on Thursday (17/11/2022), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning revealed that China also supports honest exchanges as long as the talks are held on the basis of a mutual agreement.
He also said China is taking immediate steps to improve bilateral relations with Canada.
“The video is indeed a brief conversation between the two leaders during the G20 summit. This is completely normal. I don’t think it should be interpreted that leader Xi is criticizing or accusing anyone,” explained Mao.
In the video, it appears Trudeau started the conversation first.
Trudeau said the Canadian government never released the results of his meeting with Xi. However, Trudeau confirmed that a meeting had taken place.
Not only that, Trudeau admits that not all discussions with the leaders of the countries will be easy, one of which is the Chinese and Canadian systems which are indeed different.
In the video that has gone viral on social media, Xi looks emotional with Trudeau. Xi appeared angry because the talks between them, which took place behind closed doors, fell into the public domain.
Xi was also seen smiling slightly as he spoke to Trudeau in Mandarin. Later, Xi’s interpreter attempted to convey the president’s intentions to Trudeau, which was Xi’s strong protest.
“Everything we talked about was leaked to the media and it was inappropriate,” the performer said.
Trudeau was silent as he smiled at Xi. After that, Xi came back again to express his frustration. “If you are sincere, then we must conduct our discussions with respect for each other. Otherwise, there will be unintended consequences,” he stressed.
“In Canada, we believe in free, open and frank dialogue. We will continue to work together constructively, but there will be things we will not understand.” Trudeau interrupted.
