Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Canadian national team eliminated the Venezuelan national team in the quarterfinals of the Copa America USA 2024 at the AT&T Cowboys Stadium, to advance to the semifinals as a debutant team.
Canada, led by star Alphonse Davies, eliminated perfect Venezuela in the group stage with a 4-3 penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
In this match, Canada played well by threatening the Venezuelan goal guarded by goalkeeper Rafael Romo.
In the 11th minute, Canada had three consecutive golden chances. However, nothing resulted in a goal as it was blocked by Romo and the Venezuelan defender.
A minute later, the goal the Canucks were looking for finally came true when Jacob Shaffelburg took advantage of his teammate’s acceleration in the penalty area. Score 1-0 for Canada.
In the 23rd minute, Shaffelburg had another dangerous opportunity. He threatened the Venezuela goal and almost scored a double. However, his right foot was still blocked by Romo.
Vinotinto did not remain silent. They then multiplied the attacks and only managed to collect results in the second half.
After Eduard Bello’s chance was denied in the 57th minute, Venezuela finally broke the deadlock six minutes later through their main striker Salomon Rondon.
Rondon scored a goal after winning his duel with a Canadian defender in a one-on-one in midfield.
After winning the duel, the former Premier League striker did not hesitate for long to unleash a shot from distance when he saw Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau emerge from his nest.
Rondon’s shot sailed through the Canadian goal to tie the score. The goal was Rondon’s seventh Copa America goal for Venezuela and allowed him to surpass the previous record holder José Luis Dolgetta with six goals.
The score ended 1-1 in regulation time and the match continued with a penalty shootout.
In this round, both Canada and Venezuela’s executions on the first five kickers failed. De Veenzuela, Yangel Herrera and Jefferson Savarino were the two executors who did not fulfill their duties, while from Canada it was Liam Miller and Stephen Eustaquio.
On the sixth kick, Wilker Angel’s kick was saved and the favourable situation for Canada was finally resolved well by Ismael Kone who coolly beat Romo.
In the semifinals, Canada awaits defending champion and 2022 World Cup champion Argentina on Wednesday (10/7) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
