Tennis News: The first seed, Cori Gauff has managed to book a place in the semi-finals of the ASB Classic, Auckland in the 2023 season for the first time in her career.
Looking mighty, the American tennis player finished Chinese tennis player Zhu Lin’s run with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory in the ASB Classic quarter-finals.
Zhu defeated sixth seed Madison Brengle and former world No. 1 Venus Williams, but the world No. 7 didn’t allow the Chinese to perform another miracle and made it to the semis after 1 hour and 15 minutes of struggle.
The 2022 French Open runner-up was impressive on serve as she won almost 90% of the points on her first serve, fired eight aces and didn’t face a single break point opportunity.
Again, heavy rain forced the match to be played indoors. World No. 84 Zhu showed some fighting power as he saved five break point chances to stay at 2-2. But Gauff did not falter, even taking a 5-3 lead before finally winning the first set.
The top seed made it even easier in the second set, including breaking Zhu twice. She also won 10 of her first 11 points on serve before advancing to the semi-finals for the first time since in Belin in June last season.
Waiting for Gauff in the ASB Classic semi-final was seventh seed Danka Kovinic who also earned a convincing 6-3 6-2 win over Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova.
The Montenegrin national, Kovinic fired 31 winners with just nine unforced errors and like Gauff, he didn’t face a single break point opportunity.
In other action, world number 95, Ysaline Bonaventure was surprisingly able to defeat third seed, Leylah Annie Fernandez with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 result.
Belgium’s Bonaventure was 0-4 in her previous WTA quarter-finals but was in fine form and needed just 69 minutes to defeat Canadian Annie Fernandez and reach the semi-finals of a tournament WTA for the first time in his career.
For a place in the final of the ASB Classic, Bonaventure will face Spanish tennis player Rebeka Masarova, who beat Czech Karolina Muchova 7-6, 7-6.
