Tennis News: Dan Evans won a crucial match in three sets for England when they played in the Group B group stage of the 2023 season of the Davis Cup Finals held in Manchester.
The 27-year-old beat Australian tennis player Alex De Minaur 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, giving England a 2-0 lead in Group B.
Evans, playing in his 23rd Davis Cup match for England, broke De Minaur’s serve five times in a match that lasted 2 hours 10 minutes.
In the previous match, British tennis player Jack Draper gave England a victory in his debut in the men’s team competition after eliminating Australian tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 .
The 21-year-old left-hander Draper, who last week advanced to the fourth round of the US Open, came back from falling behind with a break chance in the third set, tying it 5-5 before ultimately winning the match which lasted 2 hours 54 minutes until the deciding round.
The Australian team earned a consolation victory when its top pair, Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, beat Evans and Neal Skupski 7-6, 6-4.
England and Australia are in Group B with France and Switzerland. In the opening match, France massacred Switzerland 3-0.
Defending champions Canada also earned their first victory by defeating the host team, Italy, 3-0 in Group A held in Bologna.
In the opening match, world number 200 Alexis Galarneau was surprisingly able to beat world number 38 Lorenzo Sonego 7-6, 6-4, including saving two set point chances in the first set.
World number 158 Gabriel Diallo increased Canada’s lead after beating world number 18 Lorenzo Musetti 7-5, 6-4. The 21-year-old fired ten aces and faced no break points to claim victory after 84 minutes.
Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil further strengthened Canada’s superiority by securing a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 victory against the home team represented by Simone Bolelli and Matteo Arnaldi.
Canada and Italy are in Group A with Chile and Sweden. Chile also recorded a 3-0 victory over Sweden in the opening match of the group stage of the Davis Cup final of the 2023 season.
