Ligaosport.com –

Tennis News: First seed Daniil Medvedev didn’t get everything he wanted in the 2022 Vienna Open final.

However, the 2021 US Open champion raised the bar when he needed to and beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win a second Vienna Open 2022 title.

The first seed was helpless against Shapovalov in a thrilling opening set after the Canadian fired 21 winners to take the lead. However, the world number 4 refused to give up throughout the match which lasted 2 hours 16 minutes after striking better and fairer in the second and third sets to force the Canadian into error.

“I feel really happy,” exclaimed Medvedev. “This game is the best game of the week because Denis played really outstanding until maybe 4-3 in the second set. He lowered his level by about 2% and I was able to take advantage of that. It’s one of the best wins when you know your opponent is in front of you, but you try, defend and do what you can do.”

Now the first seed is ahead in their 4-2 head-to-head and thanks to the victory he is 45-15 on the season. Earlier this season he made it to the Australian Open final before winning the title in Los Cabos.

The 26-year-old looked to be back in top form with a dominant week at the Vienna Open. He didn’t drop a set or lose a serve making it to the final while earning a ticket to the ATP Finals to be held November 13-20 in Turin.

In front of a crowd watching the Vienna Open final, the first seed displayed a moment of magic in the third set after blasting Shapovalov with a series of impressive shots. He hit 24 winners and broke five times en route to sealing victory by converting a sixth match point opportunity.

Medvedev now has 15 titles and seven of them he won in indoor hard-court tournaments. He will now head to the Paris Masters and aim for a second title at the Masters 1000 tournament.

“I love playing indoor tournaments at the end of the season,” admits Medvedev. “I feel that I did a good job with my team not to come here exhausted. I’m looking forward to my last two tournaments of the season which are really important and I’m generally playing well.”

Shapovalov is playing in his second final this month after advancing to the final in Seoul. He was unable to match the intensity of the first seed in the third set in his bid to win his second career title and his first title since winning the title in Stockholm in 2019 .
