Tennis News: The world’s 18th tennis player, Denis Shapovalov and his compatriots made history after helping Canada win the Davis Cup.
Reflecting on being part of the team that helped Canada win their first Davis Cup title, the world number 18 paid tribute to his country and said he had always dreamed of being part of such a historic moment. .
The 23-year-old said it was an unreal feeling and was delighted to be on an unforgettable trip with his compatriots.
“It’s a dream!!! We grew up wanting to be part of the team that would help Canada win their first Davis Cup title. It’s hard to explain how surreal it is, but it’s a feeling of gratitude to everyone who brought us here and I’m proud to be Canadian!!!Shapovalov wrote via social media.
Moreover, he praised his compatriots and their coach, while thanking the fans for their support.
“I am proud of Félix Auger Aliassime, Vasek Pospisil, Alexis Galarneau, Gabriel Diallo, coach Frank Dancevis. Unforgettable trip together!!! Thank you to all Malaga fans, at home and around the world, to all Canadians everywhere, for all your support!!! World champion.”
Canada won its first Davis Cup title three seasons after reaching the final of the competition for the first time. In the 2019 season, Auger Aliassime and Shapovalov couldn’t defeat more experienced Spanish sides like Roberto Bautista Agut and Rafael Nadal. But in the 2022 season, the two young stars managed to turn things around after beating Australian nationals Alex De Minaur and Thanasi Kokkinakis respectively.
The two young players were also key to Canada’s triumph over the tennis world after winning the Davis Cup junior title in 2015 and most recently the ATP Cup in January 2022.
“I have improved a lot this season, especially since the Cincinnati tournament, the US Open. Everything seems to be falling into place for me and I’ve been able to consistently play better,” Shapovalov said in a press conference after the Davis Cup final.
“Even the defeats I’ve had before have been positive defeats and almost every game I’ve played. It’s a positive sign for next season, that’s for sure. I think everyone knows that I can play great matches, but to be the best tennis player you need this consistency.”
“I think I need to work on a few points, train to be more consistent and implement the level I’ve shown over the last two months. Hopefully from there we can move forward.
