Discover the films presented at Jakarta World Cinema Week 2023

Jakarta: Jakarta World Cinema Week (JWCW) will be held again from November 11 to 19, 2023 at CGV Grand Indonesia, Central Jakarta. This international film festival will present 90 films from 54 countries which can be viewed live in cinemas and on the KlikFilm streaming service.

JWCW 2023 will be opened with a film God willing, a boy (Jordan) directed by Amjad Al-Rasheed. While the film Shayda from Australia directed by Noora Niasari will be the final.

Several award-winning films at international film festivals will be screened. Call it like Monsters (Japan) by Hirokazu Kore-eda which also won the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, and Anatomy of a fall (France) by Catherine Corsini, winner of the Grand Prix of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

“The films present at KlikFilm have been selected by the team. The films present are undoubtedly quality films that have been present in international film festivals before JWCW,” said Shandy Gasela, Director of JWCW.

Here is a summary of the films that can be viewed via the KlikFilm digital platform at the JWCW festival.

Substraction

This film, premiering at the 2023 Tiff (Toronto International Film Festival), tells the story of Farzaneh (Taraneh Alidoosti), a young driving instructor who lives with her husband Jalal (Navid Mohammadzadeh). One day, she saw her husband enter the house of a stranger.

When she met Jalal, he admitted that he was out of town at the time. Jalal then decided to check the house himself. When Jalal arrived there, he met a woman named Bita who looked like Farzaneh. Stunned, the two men compared photos of their partners. Bita’s husband Mohsen also resembles Jalal.

The young imam

Bearing the original title The Young Imam, this film tells the story of Ali, a 14-year-old teenager. To give him a good education, his single mother sent him to a madrasa in Mali. When Ali returned ten years later, he had completely changed.

He received a pious religious upbringing and his deep knowledge of Islam made him the ideal candidate to become the local imam of his town, despite his young age and his mother’s doubts. His modern vision and charisma quickly made him popular within the Muslim community, until his desire to do good fueled his new ambition.

Young ladies

This Canadian drama film was written and directed by Graham Foy. Starring Marcel T. Jiménez as Colton, a teenager dealing with his grief following the death of his friend Kyle (Jackson Sluiter) in an accident, and Hayley Ness as Whitney, their classmate whom Colton has found the journal in the ravine where Kyle died. The Maiden premiered in the Giornate degli Autori program at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2022, and premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.

White paradise

A 2022 French drama thriller written and directed by Guillaume Renusson and starring Denis Ménochet, Zar Amir Ebrahimi and Victoire Du Bois. The film premiered at the Angoulême French Film Festival on August 24, 2022.

This film tells the story of Samuel, a widower who lives isolated in the heart of the Italian Alps. One night, Chehreh, a young Afghan woman taking refuge in her house, found herself stuck in the snow. He wanted to cross the mountains to reach France. Samuel didn’t want to get into trouble but faced with her distress, he decided to help her. Besides nature, they also have to face obstacles from the local population, who get in their way.

Burning days

Emre, a young and dedicated prosecutor, has just been appointed to a small town hit by a water crisis and political scandal. After the initial welcome, he experiences increasingly tense interactions and is reluctant to get involved in local politics. As Emre bonds with the owner of a local newspaper, pressure mounts as the rumors intensify. In addition to being present at the Cannes Film Festival, this film also won an award at the Golden Orange Film Competition.

Youth (spring)

It is a 2023 documentary film directed by Wang Bing. The film is an international co-production between China, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The film focuses on a group of young textile workers in the Chinese town of Zhili. The film Youth (Spring) was selected for the Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, whose world premiere took place on May 18, 2023.

Possession

Possession is a 1981 psychological drama horror film directed by Andrzej ?u?awski and written by ?u?awski and Frederic Tuten. This film has been remade in several countries. In Indonesia, the production house Falcon Pictures will produce the film Possession.
