Do you know? Korea dominate men’s doubles at world championships in Copenhagen

Badminton News: Copenhagen is hosting the world championships for the fifth time next week, 40 years after first hosting the world’s best player in the competition in 1983.

It is also the only edition of the men’s doubles that the Korean pair did not win in the Danish capital. But at each of the next three world championships, Korea emerged victorious.

Park Joo Bong/Kim Moon Soo won in 1991, Ha Tae Kwon/Kim Dong Moon in 1999, and Ko Sung Hyun/Shin Baek Cheol in 2014.

While China has an excellent track record in men’s singles and women’s doubles, it is interesting to note that Copenhagen is the only city where Korea has had success in men’s doubles over the past 33 years.

Their only world championship title elsewhere came in Calgary, Canada in 1985. In fact, the 1999 and 2014 finals were all-Korean and the last edition also saw them win bronze, making them the only nation to leave the championship. with the three men’s doubles medals.

They didn’t come back empty-handed in 1983 either, winning bronze via Lee Eun Ku/Park.

This year, Korea is back with strong contenders, namely ninth seed Kang Min Hyuk/Seo Seung Jae and 12th seed Choi Sol Gyu/Kim Won Ho.

Choi/Kim have a German Open title to show for their efforts this season while Kang/Seo enter the tournament as champions of the final event of the HSBC BWF World Tour, the Australian Open. Also winner of the Malaysia Masters in May, the world No. 6 currently occupies second place in the HSBC Race to Finals ranking.

Will any of them maintain Korea’s uniqueness in Copenhagen?
