Dramatic Uruguay wins consolation prize at 2024 Copa America

jpnn.com – CHARLOTTE – Uruguay struggled to beat Canada in the consolation match, the third-place match of the Copa America 2024, at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, Sunday (14/7) morning WIB.

Uruguay, World Cup champions in 1930 and 1950 and holders of 15 Copa America titles, had to play a penalty shootout to beat Canada.

The two teams drew 2-2 after 2 x 45 minutes and the Copa America did not grant extra time, it went straight to penalties.

In normal times, Luis Suarez was Uruguay’s savior.

Suarez, who came on in the 45th minute to replace Darwin Nunez, scored a goal in the 90+2 minute. The goal that equalized the score at 2-2.

Earlier, Uruguay took the lead through Rodrigo Bentacur in the 8th minute.

Canada equalized and took the lead thanks to Ismael Kone’s goal in the 22nd minute and Jonathan David’s goal in the 80th minute.

The high tension of the match continued in the penalty shootout. Tense, even Canadian goalkeeper Dayne St Clair received a yellow card for his actions during the penalty shootout.
