England beat Canada 21-12 in Sunday’s WXV1 decider to retain the title.

Hosts Canada put the Red Roses under intense pressure, but the defending champions recovered, extending their winning streak to 20 games with a nine-point victory.

Canada dominated the opening minutes of the match on penalties, but England responded quickly.

Joe Aldcroft, Sarah Byrne and Maude Muir each got England on the scoreboard with a try, while Helen Rowland made three conversions.

Canada took the lead midway through the second term with a penalty conversion, but couldn’t build momentum.

England faced a further challenge in the second half when full-back Ellie Kildunne was booked.

After a defensive struggle between the two teams, Byrne broke a Canadian tackle on the try line to give England the lead.

Aldcroft’s final effort ensured success.

England have not lost a match since their dramatic defeat to New Zealand in the 2022 World Cup final.
