“A month from now, Indonesia will be in the spotlight of the world as it hosts the basketball world cup. We have a new and beautiful indoor stadium, and the defending champion, as well as the first in the world basketball rankings, Spain appears here. This means that we must also be prepared to be a good host and to be successful so that this event can catapult Indonesia’s name even more,” said Erick Thohir during a dinner with ambassadors from the countries that will compete in Jakarta. , Thursday 07/20/2023.
Five representatives from eight participating countries attended the banquet hosted by the Board of Directors of the Indonesian Basketball Association (PP Perbasi), namely Spanish Ambassador Francisco Aguilera Aranda, Vazken Kavlakian (Chargé d’Affaires from the Embassy of Lebanon), Mahdi Rounagh (Chargé d’Affaires from the Embassy of Iran), Lindolpho Cademartori (Deputy Head of Mission from the Embassy of Brazil) and Mark Strasser (Chargé d’Affaires from the Embassy of Lebanon). “I was very excited by the representatives of these friendly countries. They were also eager and ready to liven up the Indonesia Arena when their country’s teams played against each other, because after all, the basketball world cup is an event every four years with a similar level to the Olympics,” he said.
Erick also urged sports fans, especially basketball, not to miss the great opportunity to witness the action of world basketball stars from various countries. Additionally, there are a number of players who compete in the NBA.
“It’s a rare opportunity. Even though we co-host Japan and the Philippines, the time to host the Basketball World Cup may not come in 10 or 20 years. Like when we hosted the 2018 Asian Games, or later when hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup, this is our opportunity to show Indonesia’s progress in the eyes of the international community,” Erick said.
A total of 32 countries participated in the FIBA Basketball World Cup which was held in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines. Jakarta, as hosts, will hold preliminary round matches in two groups, namely Group G which includes Spain, Iran, Ivory Coast and Brazil, while Group H includes Canada, Latvia, Lebanon and France.
