This new law requires digital technology companies to reach fair commercial agreements with local Canadian media to disseminate information or face legal action in Canada.

The two Silicon Valley giants opposed the bill, which aims to prop up Canada’s struggling news sector and has led to the closure of hundreds of publishers over the past decade.
“Exciting news,” Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said on Twitter after the bill was passed.
He said Meta’s decision to block news content was unfortunate, but was made to defend Canadians from threats from outside media.
