Tennis News: Felix Auger Aliassime and Dominic Thiem played one of the best games of the 2022 World Tennis League season in Dubai after both working hard to win for their respective teams.
Before the two tennis players met at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, the position between Team Kites and Team Hawks was quite even, so both players could win matches for their respective teams. But the game between the two players was clouded by a very strange arrangement after it was announced by the referee shortly before the decisive point was played.
In the first set, World Tennis League spectators watched as each player had a break before the set was decided in a tie-break which Canadian Auger Aliassime won 7/2, a significant advantage in the match.
However, no break point opportunity was created in the second set and once again both players had to enter the tiebreaker round. This time the Austrian was able to create a set point opportunity but the Rotterdam 2022 champions equalized before a weird rule was introduced.
Usually tiebreakers are played until one of the players leads by more than two points when the score is 6/6, but not with the World Tennis League. During the substitution, the referee announced that the next point would be the decider with serve on the Auger Aliassime, a situation that seemed unfair for a player receiving seevis, especially against a player serving the Canadian national.
Auger Aliassime also fired an ace which rendered 2020 US Open champion Thiem unable to do anything before the Canadian tennis player finally took the win 7-6, 7-6. However, a smile blooms on the Austrian’s face after realizing it was an exhibition event.
With the win, Team Kites beat Team Hawks 42-31.
In the previous match, Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek teamed Team Kites ahead of Team Hawks after beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-3.
The highest-ranked woman to enter the exhibition event was the undisputed leader of her team and she once again proved herself in her match against Pavlyuchenkova.
Swiatek had to claim victory to keep hope alive for his side after Auger Aliassime and Sania Mirza lost in mixed doubles to Alexander Zverev and Elena Rybakina 7-5, 3-6, 10-5.
Swiatek started well after receiving a break, but Pavlyuchenkova responded by taking a 4-3 lead. But from this position, the world number 1 tennis player managed to snatch the last three matches in a row.
In the second set, Pavlyuchenkova again took a 3-1 lead. But Swiatek again showed strength by winning five games in a row before winning the game in 80 minutes.
