Tennis News: The World Tennis League kicked off on Monday (12/19) local time in Dubai, hosted by a number of tennis stars including Felix Auger Aliassime.
The 2022 World Tennis League season kicked off with a mixed doubles where Team Eagles represented by Nick Kyrgios and Bianca Andreescu defeated Team Kites represented by Holger Rune and Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-3.
Rune and Bouchard failed to convert all three of their break point chances, while Kyrgios and Andreescu converted three of the six they created.
In the first set, Team Eagles faced the first three break point opportunities which they saved before smashing Team Kites in the next game.
In the second set, Rune and Bouchard were unable to create a single break point opportunity, while Kyrgios and Bouchard managed to convert one of their two break point opportunities to snatch the victory in the second set.
In another action, tennis player who has won three Grand Slam titles, Iga Swiatek, who represents team Kites, managed to eliminate the champion of the 2022 WTA Finals, Caroline Garcia, who represents team Eagles, 6-3, 6-4 in 67 minutes in the World Tennis League.
The world number 1 tennis player, Swiatek served well in both sets and lost just seven points on her first serve. He also converted three of the six break point opportunities he created.
In the 2022 WTA Finals, Polish national Swiatek beat Garcia in the group stage but the French national avenged that loss when they met in the semi-finals.
After that, Canadian tennis player Auger Aliassime proved convincing enough to beat Kyrgios 7-5, 6-3 in less than an hour in the men’s singles match.
Team Eagles’ Kyrgios had an early break before taking a 3-0 lead, but Team Kites’ Auger Aliassime fought back. For the second time he beat the Australian tennis player to win the first set.
Auger Aliassime then broke the Australian tennis player twice before winning the second set. Thanks to this victory, the Canadian tennis player obtained a bonus of five points as champion that day, so that the Kites team temporarily won 35-27 over the Eagles team in the first daytime.
The World Tennis League is a mixed team exhibition event first held at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai from December 19-24. The event featured four teams namely Team Falcons, Team Eagles, Team Kites and Team Hawks which was bolstered by a number of tennis stars.
