Ferrari knows about SF23 disease, but 1,000 technicians can’t cure it

mobilinanews (Italy) – This weekend’s Canadian GP will be a particular challenge for Ferrari, whether it’s battling Mercedes or being sunk further. It is the team that is targeted, because it is already impossible to catch Red Bull Racing.

Like Mercedes, Ferrari also made numerous technical changes to the SF23 entering the Spanish Grand Prix. However, when Lewis Hamilton and George Russell managed to score double podiums, the Ferrari jockeys still did not move on.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has also confirmed that the main problem for the Italian national team is the incompatibility of the character of the SF23 with the 2023 specification Pirelli tyres, even though this tire manufacturer also does the pride of Italy.

Before and during the Spanish Grand Prix, a tire problem that prevented Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz from obtaining positive results.

“Our problem is not with the engine, the chassis or the aerodynamic package. It’s only with the tires and it’s not easy to fix because of the different issues,” Vasseur said.

He called out Leclerc, who in practice sessions and competitive qualifying, but in the race he was even slower, even with the same set-up and tire compound. At Sainz the case is different, the tires only lasted 15 laps.

“The inconsistency is the main problem. We involve 1,000 people to solve the problem,” Vasseur said, whether that’s 1,000 real technicians or just a figurative word to describe the complexity of the tire issue that has been a problem for SF23 from the start. of the season.

After the Spanish series, Ferrari focused on this problem. The closest test is the Canadian GP from June 16-18, 2023 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

“Once the tire performance is consistent, I can imagine fighting with Mercedes in every race. With Red Bull it’s a different story, especially against Max (Verstappen). He’s a lot faster in qualifying, and a lot faster in the race.”

Leclerc also responded to the special preparations for Canada with a flat tone.

“We really have to keep looking for the cause of the inconsistency and fix it. Let’s wait and see what happens in Canada,” said Leclerc, who so far has only managed to bring Ferrari on board once. the podium. (rn)
