“Aizsardzība… Aizsardzība… Aizsardzība!” This cry resounded when Latvia faced France in the FIBA World Cup 2023 Group H match at the Indonesia Arena, Gelora Bung Karno Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Sunday evening (27/8/2023) .
Aizsardzība is a Latvian word meaning defense, a word usually shouted by basketball spectators when their team tries to resist an opponent’s attack to score.
Among the more than 11,000 spectators who watched the match between Latvia and France live FIBA World Cup 2023, half of whom are supporters of the team from the former Soviet Union. They brought flags, snare drums and unique trinkets. During the match, during the timeout, they also did the Mexican wave which was followed by other spectators in the Indonesian stands, even though they were not Latvian fans.
