Finally, Canada strongly criticizes Israel over the killing of babies in Gaza

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, OTTAWA — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday (11/14/2023) that the killing of women, children and babies in the besieged Gaza Strip must stop, in his most critical criticism virulent attack on Israel since the war against Israel. Hamas broke up more than a month ago.

Canada has previously said Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas, once a militant group. Palestine it attacked southern Israel last month. The attack killed 1,200 people and took more than 200 Israelis hostage.

However, like the United States and its allies, Canada has also expressed concern over the rising death toll in the conflict-torn enclave. In fact, Gaza health authorities currently say that 11,200 civilians and children have died since the start of the Israeli counter-offensive.

“I urge the Israeli government to exercise maximum restraint. The world is watching, on television and on social media, we are hearing testimonies from doctors, family members, survivors, children who lost their parents,” he said.

“The world is witnessing the murder of women, children and babies. This must stop,” he said at a news conference in the western province of British Columbia.

The lives of 36 babies at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza were in danger on Tuesday, according to medical staff there. The hospital’s medical team said there was no clear mechanism to move them despite Israeli efforts to provide incubators for their evacuation.

Three of 39 premature babies have died since Gaza’s largest hospital ran out of fuel over the weekend. This fuel is needed to power the generator that runs the special incubator for premature babies.

Unfortunately, Trudeau is also reluctant to blame Israel’s barbarity, as he did on Hamas. He said Hamas must stop using Palestinians as human shields and must release all its hostages.

About 350 Canadian citizens, permanent residents and members of their families were evacuated from Gaza, he added. Last week, Trudeau called for a significant humanitarian pause in the conflict to allow the release of all hostages and the delivery of sufficient aid to meet the needs of civilians.

However, Israel rejected the lengthy humanitarian pause, granting only a four-hour respite from ongoing attacks on Gaza. Israel has also rejected international requests to allow aid to Gaza through its territory.

Israel’s refusal to allow aid to pass through the Kerem Shalom crossing is rooted in its desire to disassociate itself from all civilian aspects of Gaza, as well as Netanyahu’s fear of a political crisis. “We understand Israel’s concerns, but we are trying to prevent a humanitarian disaster in Gaza,” a Western diplomat told Haaretz.
