The raging fire has prompted the government to issue a mandatory evacuation order for all residents in the area and not be allowed to return until further orders are issued.
Reuters reported on Tuesday (5/30) that the evacuation could have a serious impact on approximately 18,000 people, according to Halifax Mayor Mike Savage.
The mayor declared a local state of emergency for areas already under mandatory evacuation orders, which on Monday covered an area of around 100 square kilometers, stretching from Upper Tantallon south to beyond from Upper Sackville and Central Sackville to the north.
This suburban community is home to many city workers and is located approximately 15 miles from Halifax.
Firefighters said the blaze was large, widespread and out of control. The fire broke out on Sunday in Haut-Tantallon and destroyed dozens of homes. There were no reports of deaths or injuries.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concern, calling the fire situation in the province of Nova Scotia, where Halifax is located, “very serious.” The government is ready to provide any help if needed, he said.
