Four UNAIR delegates participate in a simulation of a UN session in Canada

UNAIR NEWS – A total of four delegates from Airlangga University participated in a simulation of the UN session of the Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) in Montreal, Canada, from March 13 to 18. This prestigious event brought together more than two thousand student delegates from 136 countries. They come from students from various universities around the world, including UNAIR.

The four students are Dirgandaru Galih Waskito (International Relations student/2014), Fransiska Berliani (English Literature/2015), Andreyanto Surya Putra (HI/2013) and Eko Ratmoko (HI/2015).

Delegates gained valuable experience through their participation in the WorldMUN event. They practice negotiation and diplomacy extensively by debating with students from around the world.

“This event provides us with a venue to interact with students from around the world, exchange ideas, insights and solve international problems,” said Dirga, head of UNAIR’s WorldMUN delegation.

As a gathering place for scholars from various countries around the world, WorldMUN is a forum for the exchange of ideas related to international political issues. Starting with immigration, health, security and various other international political issues.

Learn to be diplomatic

In this international forum, all participants seem to be diplomats from specific countries. All the sessions of the forum refer to the sessions usually organized by the UN. Of course, many rules are stated.

Step by step The trial refers to the sessions held by the UN. We do not create our own events. “By making amendments, by developing draft resolutions, we learned how the UN holds its meetings,” Fransiska said.

Fransiska added that it is important for students to participate in mock UN sessions like this one. In addition to training in negotiation and diplomacy skills, many soft skills can be acquired through the MUN event. The fact is that the MUN event is not only useful for students who aspire to become diplomats. The soft skills acquired through this forum can be applied in everyday life.

“The main objective is to train SKILLS diplomacy and negotiation. But we can learn a lot from MUN. Negotiations are not just for diplomats. But many general skills necessary for students. “It’s like a polite debate about how to behave, training us to exchange ideas, ideas and ideas with other people,” Fransiska said.

Introduction to Indonesian Culture

Still in the WorldMUN forum series, there are events global village. During the simulation of the UN session, each delegation from each country made stand present the identity of their home country. Dirga and the team are very proud. Because only his team shows itself stand in a unique and different way.

“At that time, we decorated stand which represents Reog Ponorogo. We will bring the culture of East Java there. We wear East Java costumes and we are the only ones stand which is halal. Stand Others don’t highlight their culture, but highlight food, drinks, and especially alcohol,” Dirga said with a laugh.

Apparently, stand of the UNAIR delegation received more attention from the participants. “We explained that Reog Ponorogo is part of our culture. We explained that Reog wears a mask and has mystical powers. They are very excited (happy),” Dirga remembers.

Canadian public life

The extreme temperature in Canada had dropped to minus 27 degrees Celsius, fortunately it did not affect the health of Dirga and the team. They admitted that they were amazed by the life of the people in Canada, such as the high level of tolerance between communities, the obedience of people to local government regulations and the orderly traffic flow on the city streets.

“There are no traffic jams, much less speeding. The city streets are very orderly. Canada is very open to immigration, so people come from many countries. “But they have never been in conflict,” Dirga said.

What was even more astonishing to Dirga and his friends was that even though they had gone all the way to Canada, they had still “discovered” Indonesia there.

“We met people who had lived in Jakarta. He is very friendly. “All along the way to Montreal, we met people who spoke Indonesian,” says Dirga.

Before leaving for Canada, the four UNAIR delegations had gone through different stages. Starting from internal selection, preparation of conference materials and preparation for departure. The internal selection was carried out by the Airlanggaa Model United Nations (AIRMUN) community.

This community, chaired by Ni Putu Indah Maharani, has become in recent years a bridge allowing students to participate in prestigious MUN events, be it WorldMUN, Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN), Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference (AMUNC), and various MUNs at the national level.
