The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned travelers to expect flight delays of up to two hours at New York’s LaGuardia and Newark International airports.

According to Flight Aware, approximately 619 flight delays at New York Airport were reported as of 5:50 p.m. EST (10:50 p.m. BST).

Millions of people are subject to air quality advisories in both countries.

The airline gridlock has had a ripple effect, delaying flights at airports from Atlanta to Houston. Flights to Philadelphia’s main airport were also affected.

Approximately 108 flights were delayed at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

“Weather conditions have caused flight disruptions to LGA airport. Contact your airline to determine your flight status,” New York’s LaGuardia Airport was quoted by the BBC as saying.

As Canadian firefighters struggled to control the 400 wildfires raging across the country, smoke engulfed much of the country’s east and east coast.

Health officials in both countries have issued warnings about potentially dangerous air quality and pollution.

There are more than 150 fires in Quebec alone, but according to the province’s premier, François Legault, there are only enough firefighters to fight 40.

During a press conference on Wednesday (7/6/2023), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said more than 230 fires were raging and more than 20,000 people had fled their homes.

“Firefighters responded. First responders escalated the dire situation to save their fellow citizens,” he said.

If the fires continue at this rate, Canada could face its worst fire season on record. So far this season, some 3.8 million hectares (9.39 million acres) of land have burned.

The White House said it would send support to Canada to help fight the fires.

Smoke from the wildfires has drifted south, blanketing New York in fog so thick tourists can barely see the iconic Statue of Liberty.

Officials said residents should expect poor air quality and smog to persist through Thursday (6/1/2023) evening in Toronto and most of Ontario.

Air quality in New York is expected to remain “unhealthy” through Thursday, while Washington DC is also bracing for low air levels as smoke moves south.

Experts have warned residents of smoke-hit areas to take warnings about poor air quality seriously.

Poor air quality can cause eye, nose and throat irritation. As weather conditions worsen, it can become more difficult to breathe and put pressure on the lungs and heart.
