Hindu temple in Canada covered in anti-Indian graffiti after being vandalized



A video has been circulating on social media showing the destruction of the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir temple in Toronto. Graffiti with anti-Indian slogans were scattered across the walls of the temple.

“We strongly condemn the vandalism of BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto with anti-India graffiti. (We) have requested the Canadian authorities to investigate the incident and take immediate action against the perpetrators,” the Indian High Commission said on Twitter.



Charge The week On Thursday (15/9), Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya said the temple had often been the target of vandalism in the past.

Another Canadian MP of Indian origin, Sonia Sidhu, also expressed shock over the incident and called on the perpetrator to be held accountable.

“We live in a multicultural and multi-religious community where everyone has the right to feel safe. Those responsible must be held accountable for their actions,” Sidhu said on Twitter.

The Khalistani are a Sikh separatist movement that seeks to create a separate state from the Punjab region. The Indian government’s relations with this separatist group have not been harmonious for decades, until the call for the 2020 Khalistani referendum.
