Hot temperature, Copa America referee fainted during Peru-Canada match

Jakarta: The assistant referee of the Peru-Canada 2024 Copa America match fainted due to the extreme heat that hit Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

The temperature in the stadium is known to have reached 91 degrees Fahrenheit, the equivalent of 32 degrees Celsius. The assistant referee named Humberto Panjoj collapsed at the end of the first half. Fortunately, Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, who saw the incident, was immediately alerted and told the head referee, Mario Escobar, to seek medical assistance.

Report of New York Times, the air temperature in the stadium reached 32 degrees Celsius (91 F) with an air humidity of 51 percent. This condition is considered hostile to players and match officials.
Panjoj received first aid on the sidelines, he also seemed able to stand for a while. However, due to security concerns, Panjoj was eventually removed from the field for further examination.

The Guatemalan assistant referee who collapsed was later replaced by Ecuadorian Ricardo Fabian Baren Cordova at the start of the second half.

We know that Conmebol, as organizer of the Copa America 2024 in the United States, has published a protocol to deal with high heat. This is normal given that several host stages can potentially be affected by high temperatures and humidity.

Of the 14 stadiums in use, eight of them are open stadiums directly exposed to the scorching sun. His party has therefore called on its supporters, football players and officials to consume plenty of mineral water to avoid dehydration.
