Compact as members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Canada will send four Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine after receiving the green light from Germany.
“This contribution, combined with contributions from allies and partners, will greatly help the Ukrainian Armed Forces [bertahan melawan invasi Rusia]”Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand was quoted by Reuters as saying on Thursday (26/1).
The decision was made by Canada after Germany allowed other countries, such as Poland, to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Countries wishing to send tanks manufactured in Berlin must obtain permission from Germany, in accordance with the laws of the country.
Not only that, Germany will also send 14 of its Leopard 2 tanks to reinforce Ukraine against Russia.
The Netherlands join
Besides Canada, the Netherlands has also recently declared that it is preparing to send tanks to Ukraine. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the delivery of the tanks would be made if Ukraine also needed help from the Netherlands.
“If the contribution from the Netherlands helps, we are ready to do so,” Rutte said. RTLWednesday (25/1).
Rutte said the Netherlands could send tanks from Germany which they are currently renting. However, it is not yet known how many tanks the Netherlands will supply to Ukraine.
So far, a number of European countries that are members of the North Atlantic States Defense Alliance or NATO have also planned or confirmed that they will supply tanks to Ukraine.
They include the United States with the M1 Abrams, Great Britain with the Challenger 2, France with the Leclerc, then Poland, Spain, Portugal and Norway with the Leopard 2.
However, the combat vehicle could not arrive in Ukraine in the near future. Because it takes soldier training to operate and maintain these sophisticated tanks.
