Meanwhile, India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant stressed that the Ukraine issue was not the only big challenge facing the world.
“There is a big challenge where a lot of people are losing their jobs… and acting to achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is also a challenge. There is a big challenge where a third of the world is hit by the inflation and an economic downturn On top of all this, we are facing food, fuel and fertilizer supply issues,” Kant said.
“So let me say that there are significant challenges and issues in Ukraine, but there are many more significant issues. And from a global perspective, it’s very important to address issues of development, the SDGs, climate action, technological transformation so that we are able to impact society as a whole, and not obsess over one issue,” he continued.
He added that the G20 should be a forum for development and growth.
“The G20 is a development forum. A forum to drive growth and financial inclusion. And I think the G20 should focus on all of these development issues and that’s really the key to moving forward.” , he explained.
Regarding the list of countries invited for the G20 leaders’ summit to be held next September, Kant informed that India has invited 9 countries other than G20 members. The nine invited countries are Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mauritius, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Netherlands, Oman and Singapore.
Further, he also assured that as long as it is chaired by India, the G20 will focus more on peaceful solutions to address global challenges and growth and other issues of concern to citizens across the world rather than focus only on geopolitical issues.
“There will be a statement from New Delhi full of optimism and hope. You can be sure that the declaration will be decisive, ambitious and action-oriented,” Kant said.
India will succeed Indonesia as chair of the G20 in December 2022. India’s one-year presidency will culminate with the convening of the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for September 9-10, 2023 in New Delhi.
