Indonesia and Canada Agreed to Negotiate to Expand Indonesia Free Trade Cooperation – Canada Global partnership agreement (CEPA). The National Standards Body (BSN) participated in the meeting that is entering its fourth round, from February 20 to 24, 2023 and specifically for the area of Standardization and Conformity Assessment (SPK), which took place from February 20 to 21, 2023 in Bandung, West. Java.
At this meeting, the Indonesian delegation was led by the Director of the BSN Standards Implementation and Conformity Assessment System, Konny Sagala, who was accompanied by representatives from the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Trade , from the Ministry of Communication and Informatics and the Ministry of Religion (BPJPH), while the Canadian delegation was led by Louise Burden of Global Affairs Canada, accompanied by representatives of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
In the previous three cycles, Canada submitted draft proposals for kind TBT / STRACAP and in this cycle the whole proposal has been deepened draft text in detail covering issues of standards, technical regulations, conformity assessment procedures, transparency, cooperation and other supporting elements. Both parties provided their views, clarifications and comments on the proposal based on the system in place in their respective countries. Negotiations proceeded constructively and both sides agreed to continue negotiations in the next round scheduled for mid-2023.
The two parties both believe that this bilateral trade cooperation, especially in the area of standardization and conformity assessment, can make a real contribution to trade facilitation between Indonesia and Canada by boosting economy, including by encouraging the development of Indonesian MSMEs.
