Indonesia successfully leads G20 amid political tensions

BALI, KOMPAS.TV – Indonesia is considered to have successfully led the G20 summit amid difficult circumstances and political tensions.

Additionally, Indonesia was appreciated for successfully bringing the final deal to the G20 summit.

This assessment was conveyed by Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau during a press conference after the G20 summit in Nusa Dua, Badung, Bali on Wednesday (16/11/2022).

Trudeau says it’s not easy to agree at the G20 forum, especially on certain issues that impact the global economy, involve many players, and when countries have different perspectives.

However, thanks to Indonesia’s efforts, all G20 members were able to reach a consensus.

“And again, we must recognize the leadership of President Joko Widodo, because it is on his leadership that all members of the G20 can find consensus,” said Trudeau, quoted by Between.

The Bali statement, Trudeau said, managed to contain a strong statement. Like responding to the Russian invasion in Ukraine and its impact which could trigger a food crisis and the global economy.

In addition, the Bali Declaration also contains a number of quite ambitious goals, especially those related to climate action and the global health architecture.

Canada also understands the various challenges faced by Indonesia and other countries around the world.

Like climate change, energy security, efforts to create a zero or low emissions world, efforts to create decent jobs are examples of challenges that Indonesia and other countries around the world are facing.

“This is an issue that we have discussed together and we are working to resolve it,” Trudeau said.

The G20 Summit resulted in an agreement which was encapsulated in the Bali Declaration.

The 52-paragraph document contains a statement of the G20 common position on a number of issues related to food and energy security, global health architecture and digital transformation.

Through the Bali Declaration, the G20 agreed to urge Russia to cease its aggression and leave Ukraine.

Even though the country’s leaders realize that the G20 is not a forum for discussing and discussing security issues, they agree that security issues still affect the global economic situation.

G20 member countries stressed the importance of upholding international law and the multilateral system that maintains peace and stability.
