Indonesia supports Timor-Leste’s accession to the WTO

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Indonesia and Timor-Leste signed a bilateral agreement regarding the accession (accession) of Timor-Leste to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the sidelines of the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland on October 23, 2023.

This bilateral agreement between Indonesia and Timor-Leste will be a catalyst (change) for greater collaboration between the two countries.

The signing was carried out by the Extraordinary Ambassador Plenipotentiary (LBPP) or Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, Febrian A. Ruddyard and the Ambassador of the Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste to the Office and to United Nations organizations Another international present in Geneva, Maria de Lurdes Martins de Sousa Bessa.

The signing took place in the presence of the Director General of International Trade Negotiations of the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono.

“This signing will be a catalyst for greater collaboration between Indonesia and Timor-Leste in the years to come. “Indonesia remains in a position to continue to fully support Timor-Leste’s membership in the WTO and ASEAN,” Djatmiko said.

At the same time, the Ambassador of Timor-Leste expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s support and assessed that Indonesia would remain the most important partner, both as a member of the WTO and the ASEAN.

In addition to joining as a member of the WTO, Timor-Leste is also seeking accession to ASEAN in order to realize its vision and mission of becoming an active player in the global and regional trading system.
