Investigation into China’s secret police office in Canada infuriates Beijing

OTTAWA China accused Canada of tarnishing its reputation after federal police Canada announced this week that they were opening an investigation into the alleged “ police station “China operates secretly in the province of Quebec.

At a press conference on Friday (03/10/2023), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said Canada should “stop sensationalizing and exaggerating this issue and stop to attack and slander China”.

“China has strictly adhered to international law and respects the judicial sovereignty of all countries,” Mao was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said Thursday it had launched an investigation into two “secret police offices” suspected of working on behalf of the Chinese government in Montreal and the nearby suburb of Brossard, Quebec.

“The RCMP recognizes that Canadian citizens of Chinese origin are victims of activities allegedly carried out by these centres,” RCMP Sergeant Charles Poirier said in a statement, as reported by Société Radio-Canada.

“This activity and any form of intimidation, harassment or malicious targeting of communities or the diaspora in Canada will not be tolerated,” the statement continued.

Mao, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, did not comment on the existence of the police station or whether it was run by Chinese government authorities.
