F1 News: George Russell and Mercedes receive an official warning after an unusual incident during the qualifying session for the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Russell and team-mate Lewis Hamilton made direct contact along the pits at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the closing session of Q2.
Hamilton was forced onto the grass by the incident and suffered damage to his front wing plate, but was able to time the clock fast enough to enter Q3.
Russell, meanwhile, crashed out after Q2 amid a long struggle in qualifying with his W14.
The steward summoned the two and gave a formal warning to Russell and Mercedes.
The ruling jury explained that Russell was ‘looking forward and did not check his mirrors when he started the hot lap’.
Mercedes “did not inform (George Russell) of the approach of car 44 (Lewis Hamilton), however, as a mitigation, he reacted to the car in front of him (car 55 – Carlos Sainz), which was coming to complete a lap.
“Also, at the end of the lap session, the driver (Russell) should have slowed down considerably to avoid the drag of cars 1 (Max Verstappen) and 55.”
For your information, the 2023 F1 season will hold its seventh series of races this year on Sunday (04/06) at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
After the Spanish Grand Prix, the Formula 1 drivers and their respective teams will fly to Canada to race in Montreal on June 18.
