Issara-Jongjit fight tarnished the image of Thai badminton

BANGKOK, KOMPAS.com — Badminton Association of Thailand president Charoen Wattanasin has released an official statement regarding the embarrassing incident, a brawl between former Thai men’s doubles partners Bodin Issara and Maneepong Jongjit during the Open final of Canada, Sunday (7/21/2013).

This fight was recorded on video and broadcast online, where thousands of people downloaded it. In the video, Issara can be seen chasing his former partner, Jongjit, off the field, then punching and kicking him repeatedly on the ground.

Issara, who ultimately received two stitches, said Jongjit hit her with a racket. Both players immediately received a warning from the referee.

“In this case, I don’t see who is right or wrong. The damage is done and I am trying to save our nation’s pride in the world of badminton,” said Charoen, who has been involved in the world of badminton Thai. for almost 60 years, Friday (7/26/2013).

“I have never seen such a shameful incident. Badminton is a dignified sport. Something like this has never happened before,” he added.

Thursday (7/25/2013), World Badminton Federation (BWF) said the disciplinary committee is investigating the incident and questioned two players to prove their written explanations made on Wednesday.

Both players will be subject to sanctions for committing unsportsmanlike acts. Issara must be prepared to face additional sanctions for committing physical abuse and tarnishing the integrity of the sport.

There has been no official statement regarding the details of the sanctions against them. However, it is quite possible that both will be banned from competition and fined.

The two players, both 22, were once at the top of world doubles and advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2012 Olympics in London. The two were separated in January 2013 because Issara stepped away to care for her ailing mother. Shortly after, he returned and teamed up with another player.

The Canadian Open final featured two Thai men’s doubles. Jongjit and his new partner, Nipitphon Puangpuapech, met Issara who was partnered with Pakkawat Vilailak. The match ended after Issara received a black card.

Issara apologized on national television earlier this week. “My ears were hit with a loud noise until they bled and tore. I lost my temper. I apologize to all Thais for making the country look bad.”
