Basketball News: Jamal Murray is known as a player who rises quickly in the playoffs and often recovers under pressure. Unfortunately for Murray, the opposite will happen at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Throughout the Olympics, Jamal Murray averaged just six points per game, shooting 41.2 percent from two-point range and 14.3 percent from three-point range. He played as a backup, an unusual role for the defending champions. Murray discussed his struggles in an interview with Mark Kiszla of the Denver Gazette.
“It was a tough experience, personally. It was an adjustment, for sure. First time coming off the bench, and on top of that, not playing with the ball. It was just an adjustment, playing against the best team and the best players in the world,” Murray said.
In Team Canada’s last Olympic game against France, Murray only scored 7 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 turnovers on 3/13 shooting from the field. Murray seems to have a hard time coming off the bench, both on and off the court.
It’s hard to say how Murray would fit into a starting lineup that includes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at point guard, but Murray doesn’t function well off the bench.
“I’m still adjusting to a role like that. But that’s a question for the higher-ups,” he said. Team Canada’s roster looks set to win medals at the Olympics.
Instead, the team made an unexpected farewell before the semifinals of the men’s tournament. Now Murray must think about his upcoming contract negotiations with the Denver Nuggets.
