Lieutenant-General Jenny Carignan will officially assume command of the Canadian Armed Forces during a ceremony at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa this morning.
Carignan will also be promoted to general during a change of command ceremony.
She was chosen by the federal government to become Canada’s first female defence chief, and it’s nothing new that she’s doing so for the first time.
Carignan was also the first woman to command a combat unit in the Canadian Army and her career includes deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Syria.
For the past three years, he has served as head of professional conduct and culture, a position created in 2021 following the sexual harassment scandal.
General Wayne Eyre will retire from the armed forces this summer after commanding the armed forces for nearly three years.
