Tennis News: Two tennis hosts, Jessica Pegula and Danielle Rose Collins, have compactly qualified for the third round of the 2023 Miami Open and will face off.
The third seed wasted no time in beating Canadian Katherine Sebov 6-3 6-1 in the second round of the Miami Open.
Sebov, 24, beat two top-100 players this week, namely world number 92 Kamilla Rakhimova in qualifying and world number 50 Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round, to book a match against the third seed. But he couldn’t find an answer to overcome the host tennis player’s skillful play.
Pegula broke Sebov’s serve five times throughout the match. Both players traded break chances in the first four games before it was 2-2, but from those positions the home side won seven of the next eight games to take control of the game.
The third seed drew 11 winners, far more than the six winners created by the Canadian. He also only committed 13 unforced errors, far less than the 23 unforced errors stemming from opposing rackets.
“Fortunately, I know her a little, admits Pegula, who won her first meeting at the WTA tournament.
“We played ITF tournaments around the same time and he’s played much better this season. The first set was quite difficult. I don’t really know what to do. I struggled to get through crucial moments in the first set, but then I started playing free after that.
In other action, 30th seed Danielle Rose Collins successfully defeated Bulgarian national Viktoriya Tomova 7-6, 6-2 in the second round of the Miami Open in 1 hour 31 minutes. She led 5-2 in the first set and created two set point chances at 5-4 before winning the first set in a tie-break.
Rose Collins is now 2-0 head to head against Tomova after killing the Bulgarian national at Roland Garros last season.
Heading into the third round of the Miami Open, the third seed is up 3-0 in a head-to-head match against Rose Collins.
“It’s strange that we are playing against each other in the third round. It seems like it’s too early. We know each other’s game well. But it will be a very difficult match,” said Pegula about meeting Rose Collins.
